The Rochester City School District’s state-appointed monitor Thursday issued a scathing rejection of the 2022-23 budget proposal, forcing the district to scramble to rewrite it over the next two weeks.
The monitor, Shelley Jallow, can recommend that state Education Commissioner Betty Rosa block the passage of the district’s budget if it does not align with her academic and fiscal plans. She made it clear at Thursday’s school board meeting that it does not do so.
‘The district is not even attempting to do what is best for the students and the taxpayers who have contributed millions upon millions to this district,’ Jallow said.
In particular, Jallow said it was unacceptable that the proposed $862 million budget would take $30 million from fund balance.
