This memo provides guidance to public school districts and charter schools regarding the responsibilities for supporting students transitioning into and out of juvenile detention facilities, including:
- Maintaining student enrollment while in a juvenile detention facility.
- Appointing a transition liaison to collaborate with detention programs and provide support to students and families throughout the students’ stay and when they re-enter the school community; and
- Transmitting student records to the detention facility promptly to support educational continuity.
Education continuity is necessary to reduce students’ future interaction with the justice system and keep them on a path toward college and career.
