Three new charter schools will open in Rochester in 2022, with at least one more coming on their heels the following year.
They bring the total number of charter schools in the city to 15, with 25 locations among them, educating more than 7,000 students.
Enrollment at charter schools has risen steadily over the last 20 years while enrollment in the Rochester City School District has fallen.
Three new schools were approved to open this year by either the SUNY Board of Trustees or the state Board of Regents, New York’s two authorizing entities.
One of those four, has opted to take an additional year of planning time before opening, while another school that took a planning year in 2021-22 is now ready to open.
