The grip of the coronavirus remains strong enough so that a state-level sanctioning body for high school sports decided to delay the start of the upcoming fall season.

New York State Public High School Athletic Association officials said Thursday they have voted to set the official start date for teams at its member school teams as Sept. 21. The original date when practices could be counted toward the eligibility of student-athletes to play was Aug. 24.

“As the state considers reopening, it is unrealistic to believe athletic seasons can start as originally scheduled,” said NYSPHSAA president Paul Harrica in a statement by the organization. “The priority will continue to be on the educational process and a return to learning in the safest way possible.”
