DETROIT – When her daughter was in preschool, Renee Orr started teaching her a hugely important lesson: how to stop and look for cars before crossing the street. Her friend Ella’s house was just across the road, and Orr’s daughter would take off without a single glance or a second thought when she felt like playing. Many children learn this skill in months, some in weeks. It took Orr’s daughter about five years.
