State office recommends local school be shut down

Three years after receiving a last-second reprieve from closure, Rochester’s Urban Choice Charter School is again likely to be shut down by the state Board of Regents.

In 2020, the state Education Department’s Charter School Office recommended that the Regents close the school, citing lagging student achievement. The Regents, concerned about further disruption in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, instead gave an unusual one-year extension but required the school to replace most of its trustees and partner with an outside charter management organization.

A two-year extension followed that, but the hoped-for improvements in performance did not materialize. In a letter to the school Feb. 24, the state Charter School Office informed school leaders it would recommend that the Regents close
