New guidance outlines ways to create safe environments
The New York State Education Department released updated guidance for schools Monday on creating safe environments for transgender and LGBTQ students.
The 42-page document focused on supporting students, and keeping them safe, no matter their self-identified gender — and even as some might transition from one gender to another. It covered everything from what bathrooms students should use based on their gender to changing records when a student asks to be called a new name that affirms their gender.
“Safe and supportive schools play a vital role in creating an inclusive and nurturing environment where transgender and gender expansive students can thrive academically, emotionally and socially,” state Education Commissioner Betty Rosa said.
The report noted that supporting students as they come out or transition is the safest option for them. It said a national Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network survey from 2021 found 68% of 22,295 students ages 13-21 felt unsafe at their school because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
