The Syracuse City School District reopened for hybrid learning on Monday. But some parents say the school district could do a better job addressing the needs of students who receive special education services. For this reason, one mother decided to have her son continue learning from home. Ginger Ott’s son, Walter, is an 18-year-old senior at Fowler High School. She says the district’s plan for her son lacks the stability that he needs. “He has autism, ADHD, he’s got anxiety, depression and mood disorder, and it’s very difficult for him,” Ott says. Ott also has special needs, and is currently battling lupus. She says the district has tried to accommodate special needs students, but she won’t risk her son’s life or her family’s as the district tries to juggle both the coronavirus and taking care of special education students.
